Review: Gotham Episode 2: “Knock, Knock”

So we are 2 episodes into the new season of Gotham, and we get a look at the “Maniax”.  If you saw last week’s episode,  you know that six “residents” of Arkham were broken out by a mysterious woman and her crew.  We find out that this group belongs to mysterious businessman Theo Galavan.  In this episode, the Maniax begin terrorizing Gotham by dropping dockworkers off the top of the Gotham City Chronicle news building, with letters painted on their bodies spelling out “MANIAX!”.  Now later on in the episode, we see Bruce and Alfred in his father’s “secret lair” beneath Wayne Manor…evidently his dad knew that there was a lot of corruption going on in Gotham, and was doing research into it.  This is where Bruce realizes his calling, to shed light on the darkness that has infected Gotham City.

Now my thoughts on this episode.  I think they are trying too hard to paint Jerome as the Joker.  It is almost too much sometimes.  They are trying to mix Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker with the video game version of the Joker. The character is maniacal, devious, psychotic, and a bit of a showman.  They are also introducing the fact that Edward Nygma is suffering from MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder).  This is a far cry from the first season, where he just went around the police station giving out riddles to everyone he meets.

Barbara, is also acting out of character, as she is aligned with the Maniax after betraying Gordon and trying to kill his new girlfriend.  So she will not become Gordon’s wife, as she is evidently crazy and vindictive.  The other members of the Maniax are just as crazy since they are following Jerome.  They walk into the police station and kill all the officers in the precinct. (which is hard to believe as they were out numbered…)  They then take the new commissioner hostage and kill her, while Gordon is distracted by going after Barbara outside.  He gets ambushed and beaten senseless.

The aftermath finds Bruce glad that Gordon didn’t die and Alfred talking to Lucius Fox about being trustworthy and computer repair.  (The computer they found inside the secret lair needs to be fixed because Alfred broke it trying to keep Bruce from learning what his father was doing because it may get him killed.)

I am a bit skeptical about this season as they are definitely setting up the villains to be older than Bruce with the exception of Catwoman (Selina).
